The following copper etchings are from the "Atlas Marianus" by P. Heinrich Scherer, S.J.
Designed by Johannes Degler and expertly etched by Joseph à Montaglegre of Nuremberg (the Italian one by Jacob Muller of Augsburg) these interesting original copper engravings in the "Atlas Marinus" which devoted allegorical attention to sea-going nations at a time when much of the world had been disvovered and Europeans were swarming out like bees to learn details of hitherto unknown continents, taking possessions and bringing back whatever was new to them as well as not only taking blessings to the people they met on their adventures. Pater Heinrich Sherer S.J. (1628 - 1704), a professor of mathematics and a cartographer in Munich published this beautiful atlas in 1703.
Every print is showing both, the achievements of the described people and the places in the world which they had conquered. An Englishman holding a map of New England under his arm, sails set for Brazil and India (Portugal), Spaniards setting out for Mexico and Peru, etc. etc. Your eyes do not tire of discovering hints in charmingly baroque alligorical cartouches.
All prints are in superb printing quality. Left margins have some light fraying from binding. All prints have some offsetting in margins. Margins are 1-2 cm wide. Image sizes vary slightly and are given below.
