Published in the above mentioned book of early Brazilian maps.

Printed and published in Rome, 1698

The image shows Santa Theresa casting the Euhcarist light upon the Brazilian Coat of Arms, held by two putti. From there the light bounces back on the indiginous person, who has broken the chains of slavery.

Left and right margins have been added. very light overall age toning. Deep impression.

A small water stain in upper margin. In general: Good.

Condition:

Title page and table of content page have general age toning, some minor foxing. Edges are a bit frayed.

 

The lithographs are mostly in much better than good condition. Some traces of age and use. There are some repaired tears in margins. Margins are pleasantly wide. There is some general age toning. The colors of the hand colored lithographs are beautiful and bright. Generally the overall condition of the atlas is much better than good. Two plates with damage are: Plate 19 and map 2.

(The most remarkable from the pittoresque journey in Brazil" by Moritz Rugendas)

Johann Moritz Rugendas 1802 Augsburg - 1858 Weilheim, Wuerttemberg, Germany), a blessed painter and illustrator went to Brazil at age 19 drawing impressions for Heinrich von Langsdorf's Brazilian expedition. He returned to Europe in 1825, met Alexander von Humboldt in Paris, became a close friend to him and was instigated by Humboldt to return to South America. Rugendas drew landscapes and people, their customs, their daily life.

Newly bound, most likely, in the second half 20th century. Back and corners of binding leather. Binding itself cardboard.

Book size: 35,3 x 27,3 cm (13.9 x 10.7")

Condition: Binding impeccable. Text pages and lithographs have some foxing. Text pages a little wrinkled. Some lithographs have faint water stains. In general: Much better than good.
