Reenforced center fold. On left an additional fold to fit atlas size. Map was trimmed to edges and margins were added. Upper right corner was missing to include the letter "N" of "Keulen". Paper has been added and the missing letter and the corner black lines have been added by hand. Map is a tiny bit wrinkly. But with respect to its mentioned faults the map is otherwise in good condition.

Gerard van Keulen (1678 - 1727) was the son of Johannes van Keulen (1653 - 1715) who had established a very successful business of publishing maritime atlasses and sea charts. Gerard van Keulen continued this business and produced further editions of his father's wide range work. After Janzoon Waghenaer these sea charts were of great importance to captains, helping them to avoid natural hazards along coast lines. But while Waghenaer published charts only of European coastlines, the van Keulens extended their work across the known world and showed historical events such as the siege of Gibraltar under Vice Admiral George Rook between August 1704 and February 1705. The siege ended in the conquest of Gibraltar which became then British Territory and still is.

This west-oriented copper engraving shows the City and the Bay of Gibraltar from a bird eye's view. On top is the city of Gibraltar under fire from English war vessels. The names of Captains of many war ships are given: Middagten, Beekman, van de Dussen, Okkers, Bolk, Schrijver, Admiral van de Witte, Admiral Rook, Vice Admiral, Wassenaar, Admiral Callenburgh.

The symbols for houses, churches, fortresses are depicted in such a way that they are with their bases towards the coast line. In other words: They are standing upright (top of map), lying on their sides (left side of map) and standing on their heads (bottom of map)

Granata (Granada). Originally colored copper engraving by Georg Hoefnagel ( 1543-1600) dated in the plate 1565, but published in "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" by Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg in Cologne ca 1570.

A full double page view of this grand city with a legend cartouche is north-east oriented. In the foreground, alongside a road leading to Granada a group of people making for a lively staffage. The Alhambra is on the hill on the right and in the background are the Sierra Nevada mountains. A pomegranate branch with a bow holds the cartouche with the map's legend. Verso: Text in Latin.

General light toning in the margins. In the left and right margins are almost invisible water stains. Two little spots in upper margin. Repaired tear in upper left corner. Overall condition is Very Good.
