This map was originally issued by Athanasius Kircher S.J. in the year 1675. It was the first world map showing the ocean currents, the abysses in the oceans and the vulcanos of the earth. Kircher's map was rather unadorned. Zahn, a philosopher and a Premonstratensian monk at Wuerzburg, published this map in his “Mundis Mirabili" in the year 1696. Its mark of distiction was the enormously adorned title cartouche with cherubs holding a decorative florid pediment. The volcanos are shown as red and yellow flames.

Very interesting map with detailed insets. In the upper right are insets of Nicaragua and Panama. On the left is the Isthmus of Tehuantepec with fine topographic details. In the lower left corner is an inset of the Galapagos. At the bottom are the Hawaiian Islands, the Mendanas Archipelago, the Society Islands (Tahiti) and the Friends Island Group with such islands as Tufoa, Hapai and Late. Three graphs show the topographic situation of Panama, Costa rica and Guatemala.

The following interesting series of geological sites of basalt formations we bought as a mixed lot. They were obviously accompanying a text, which was not in the lot. In spite of unrelenting research, we could not find information about the emergence. The etchings were done by various engravers, whose first names are not given. This work came incomplete into our hands.

We show the available images and list the titles. We do omit the accentuation peculiar to the French language to allow for easy reading the international computer spelling. We ask our French customers and friends for forgiveness!

All images are well printed and sharply defined. Some margins show traces of age and use, such as little repaired tears, a little smudging, possibly a little hole frayed edges and dog-ears. In general the condition is good, however. Any more serious flaws will me individually mentioned.

The copper etchings can be dated anywhere between 1780 to 1820.

Page size is: is approximately 23 x 34.5 cm (9 x 13.5").

The images are all approximately 16 x 27 cm (6 .3 x 10.6").
