MALTA236138 Knight Hospitaller "The Knights Hospitallers" or also Order of Hospitallers" was an order of men who were affiliated with a hospital in Jerusalem about 1020 AD. Two Orders of Chivalry evolved from them: ãOrder of St. John" (now named Sovereign Military Order of Malta" and ãJohanniterorden") and the Order of St. Lazarus. Their original idea for congregating was to care for sick or wounded pilgrims to Jerusalemand the Holy Land. Hospitallers were a religious as well as military order which operated from the Island of Rhodes after the Islamic conquest of the Holy Land and later from Malta. After Napoleon's capture of Malta the order became weakened throughout Europe but regained strength. There are now also four Protestant branches of this order who all have their roots in the ãRoman Catholic Sovereign Military Order of Malta" . They are headquartered in Berlin, The Hague, Stockhom and London. (summarized from a Wikipedia article) |

Some plates are derived from those of Vesalius, with improvements in the anatomical details. Each image has very small numbers or letters on the various anatomical parts. Most correspond to the numbered or lettered description (in Italian) on the reverse side. In some cases the description on the reverse side refers to another image. Page size: 26.3 x 18 cm ( 10.3 x 7 ") The paper of all the prints is in good condition. Some prints have some scattered spotting and a few show light imprint from the previous page or the reverse side print is partially visible. Special faults are mentioned below. ![]() "Des Os & autres Parties" About Bones and other Parts (of the human body) Copper engraving by Juan Valverde de Hamusco (Giovanni Valverde de Amusco) from "La anatomia del corpo Umano", the Italian edition published in Venice in 1580 by Giunta. Juan Valverde de Hamusco (also Amusco) (c.1525-c.1588) was a a Spanish anatomist. French edition. The human skeleton shown in a pensive mood. If the orb, ball, sphere or globe on the table, on which his right hand is resting, may be assumed to be our planet, the earth, the pensive thoughtfulness of his head resting on his bent arm and hand propped up on his elbow, can be interpreted as a gesture of worry. The pedestal is ornate with a picture of the human brain, which appears to be little used, considering the wide range of problems facing us humans. The skeleton's bones are lettered, the key for each letter explained on the reverse side of print in FRENCH. Condition: Left margin added. Upper left corner with shininess of glue, where margin has been fastened. Extreme upper left has some minor wrinkles. Otherwise nearly very good. No title. An allegorical print. End of a chapter in Abraham Munting's "Waare Oeffening Der Planten, Waar In De rechte Aart, Natuire, en verborgene eigenschappen der Boomen, Heesteren, Kruiden, ende Bloemen" Abraham Munting (1626-1683) Amsterdam 1672 Copper etching by Jan Goeree (1670-1731). This print is full of hints referring to Astronomy, Horticulture, Medicine, etc. I'll try try to mention a few details: Above the well composed allegorical print we see the shining sun, surrounded by stars and topped by the moon. We look like through a window into a formal garden, a palace in the distance. Three female figures play the main roll. On the left a maiden carrying a rod of Asclepius (with the snake) symbolizing the mddcical use of plants. Opposite her a sitting maiden holding fruit in her lap symbolizing harvest. and in between a kneeling (working) maiden holding a spade and a wheel with the zodiac symbolizing garden work and the interaction of the course of the year. Garden tools are spread. And on the left we have see a signal for using chemistry to gain medicine from plants. Below four maidens in circles symbolize the seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Copper etching is on the complete page, above the image: text in the Dutch language There are minor traces of age and use. Some not so important spotting. But basically the print is in good condition. Image: 19 x 20 cm (ca. 7.5 x 7.9") Sheet size: 38,5 x 24 cm (ca. 15.2 x 9.5") $ 125.00 (Please look for discount at top of this page) Order Nr.
