Beautiful Aquatint of Egypt

Luigi Mayer, an Italian painter, created, among other travel descriptions, a wonderful series of drawings of pre-Napoleonic Egypt, commissioned by the British Ambassador to Constantinople (Istanbul), Robert Ainslie, at the turn to the 19th century. Mayer's drawings were supremely implemented as aquatint engravings by Thomas Milton and very handsomely hand colored. The various plates were dated between 1801 and 1803. They were published by R. Bowyer in London in the year 1804 as “Views in Egypt, Palestine and other parts of the Ottoman Empire". With historic observations, and incidental illustrations of the manners and customs of the natives of that country .

Our series of aquatints are in very nice collectable conditon in superb hand coloring. The all have the desired general age toning, Whatman 1801 watermarks, English and French titles. Some have a tiny bit of wrinkling i the marges and a few minor traces of age and use, including some small repaired tears in margins far away from image. But in general the condition is very nice.

Roberts was one of the most noted and admired architectural and landscape painters and lithographers of his time. After travelling in many parts of Europe he made several journeys to the Near East and Egypt. He was most noted for the excellence of rendering the ancient ruins which he encountered on his travels. The following prints are from his work about Egypt, Nubia, The Near East and The Holy Land published in London 1842-49.

Page size: ca 35 x 42.5 cm (13.7 x 16.7 "). Individual plate sizes are given below.

Very fine and typical modern hand coloring. Except for some very minor fraying of outer margin edges, all prints are in very good condition unless otherwise noted. In the corners of images is the usual pinpoint marking. Some prints have very minimal spotting in margins. Each has a title in lower margin, distant from image, as shown below on the first print. There is a hand-lithographed title and signature by David Roberts in every plate. The date is almost always behind the title. Some prints have the title printed below the image. On the backside of all prints is book text, laid out for a folio size book, but, like almost always, cut down to somewhat larger than plate size.
