PIRANESI - Cammini
Giovanni Battista Piranesi ( 1720-1778), Italian architect, engraver, archeologist of proportion, is widely known as the creator of the famous series: “Vedute di Roma", those striking, large and incomperable views of Rome. But these copper etchingsis are only the most famous part of Piranesi's oeuvre. Here we show a large part of his interior architectural work, the fire place decorations. In his time fireplaces were the only source of heating. And while the fireplaces in the homes of the genral public were unimbellished useful structures, fireplaces in the homes of nobility and the wealthy were pieces of art and decoration. Piranesi, who was inclined to use ideas from antiquities for anything he designed, chose elements from Egyptian, Etruscan, and Greek art to embellish his designs. Have a look at what marvellous samples of fireplace decoration he created.
The series we show here, come from Piranesi's “Diverse Maniere d'adornare i cammini ed ogni altra parte degli edifizi desunte dall'archittetura Egizia, Etrusca e Greca con un Ragionamento Apologetico in defesa dell'Archittetura Egizia, e Toscana, opera del Cavaliere Giambattista Piranesi architteto".

In the middle arch, a child with wings (angel?), below two winged fantasy beasts. On the sides a mythical animal leg with head on top.

The sides of this fireplace are special in that a white background is shown to make the figures more plastic. On each side is a crowned woman balancing an exquisite decoration on her head. And further above is a flying horse on each side. Three gargoyles adorn the upper middle part. In the middle are Classical decorations crowned by a moon-shaped figure.
